Beschreibung
Patient, age 57, right-handed, with sciatica (pain in the sacroiliac joint, radiating to the left leg and hip, unable to stand on one leg, e.g., when getting dressed).
Her beloved cat (like a member of the family) was diagnosed with a terminal illness. The patient's husband went on vacation for a week. The patient was solely responsible for the cat. When should the decision be made to euthanize him? She found this to be an overwhelming conflict.
She made the decision on Saturday. Her husband returned on Sunday, and the pain began in the evening.
The cat was euthanized the next day. During the night, the sciatica was so bad that the patient could hardly sleep. She felt a throbbing and rumbling in her back and hip and could not lie on her left side.
Despite ibuprofen and physical therapy, the sciatica lasted exactly one week – the same length of time as the overload conflict with the cat.
Explanation: the left side for right-handed people relates to the mother-child side, i.e., the person or being is not perceived as equal.

The two-phase nature of SBS can be observed very clearly here. The location of the pain in the hip area indicates that she perceived the excessive demands as “I can't stand this through on my own.”
The decision she made or more likely the return of her husband may have been decisive in resolving the conflict, after which the pain of the PCL phase began shortly thereafter.
