Beschreibung
On January 6th, my patient came in for treatment and was upset about an incident that had happened shortly before during a walk:
The dog's hind legs suddenly gave way, and he abruptly had no strength left in his legs. He looked at his owner with a strongly frightened expression.
At our next meeting, out of interest, I specifically asked whether there had been a situation beforehand involving strong stress or fear, particularly in connection with the feeling of not being able to/not being allowed to run away.
The woman then told me about an event on the evening of December 31st. During a walk in the woods, intense fireworks suddenly started.
The dog was massively frightened and wanted to run away. However, his owner held him tight, so the dog stayed with her despite a strong urge to flee.
During the active phase, the dog ate very poorly, barely wanted to walk, and seemed “dazed”.
After the incident described on January 6th, the dog showed: a clear return of appetite, generally more relaxed behavior, and wanting to walk his normal route again.
I only mentioned the possibility that the dog might also develop a cough.
And at our next appointment, the patient additionally reported that the dog was now coughing but was not yet fully fit.
The dog suffered a motor conflict (in which he could not run away), affecting the ectodermal innervation of the muscles. During the active phase there was an (unnoticed) reduction in function, and after resolution a sudden strong functional limitation occurred, after which normalization set in. He probably had more of a death-fright conflict than a territorial-fear conflict (though I would still not rule that out), which then led to the coughing in the pcl-phase.
Further approach: The further course will continue to be monitored. The owner is mindfully accompanying the dog through the healing phase.
